New images added

Filed under: Uncategorized — Kevin Bauman @ 8:55 am

I’ve finally added new images. I’ve seen comments around the webs stating that the series is not currently active. And while it is true that I am not as active with the project as I once was, I still have around 50 images to add. So, the project could be called ‘150 Abandoned Houses’…I guess if I was ambitious enough, it could be called ‘10,000 Abandoned Houses’. That won’t happen, however, the project will continue, albeit, a bit more slowly. And I’ll try to add new images once in awhile.

Here are the two newest:

  3. Great shots. Unfortunate and sad, but interesting to look at.

  4. I found your ‘abandoned house’ site via a link of facebook and was fascinated, touched and moved by the images. I like the matter of fact style (long view including street and neighbouring surroundings). I’ve been intrested in Detriot and it’s fate, since I heard a Lodon Wainwright 3 song:Detriot is a Dying City, from the 1970’s about the decline of manufacturing and ‘white flight’ As an artist I have always lived inside the inner city due to cheap studio and cost of living and have lived in Hackney since 1977 when it was seen as dying, abandoned and dangerous,I actually moved into a road that had a number of burnt out and empty properties. I still live here but we have been regenerated (a good thing or not is debatable) My studio is actually 10 mins walk from the new Olympic site and houses in the road my artist -run studio (and still relatively affordable) are now worth 3/4 million pounds! The changes in The East End has I suppose been a success story, but this is London and we do have some places with simular problems, but not as dramatic as Detriots. My sculpture and Collages have always been about urban life and some of these issues.Check out my Face book page and website I think you might relate to my work.

  5. Hi Kevin. Thanks for the comment. I tried to photograph the houses without too much of my own interpretation…kind of like a catalog. I’ve been fascinated by Detroit for as long as I can remember. The stories my parents, grand parents, and great grandmother told, all sounded so grand, and the Detroit I knew was always in such stark contrast to those stories.

There are a ton of songs about Detroit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_about_Detroit

I’ve always liked “Panic in Detroit”, and more recently, I’ve enjoyed Claude VonStroke’s “Who’s Afraid of Detroit?”.

It sounds like your studio is in a pretty fantastic location! While I now live in Denver (the difference between the two cities is stunning), I’ll probably always maintain my love-hate relationship with Detroit. Most of my family is still there, and I return often.

I’ve already started looking at your work (I like it), though I think I’ve barely scratched the surface! I’ll definitely spend some more time there and head over to your Facebook page as well.
